From Robert R Planthold:
"PLEASE consider contacting Supe. Ross Mirkarimi and his aide, Boris Delepine with your views and concerns.
It seems especially important since the note below mentions that the City Attorney's office is reviewing Segway's proposals. Draw on your own experiences with various deputy city attorneys to get a feel why I call their involvement to your attention. Something might be legal and still be dangerous and / or dumb. Bob Planthold
Segway has approached the Rec and Park Department and is requesting a concession in GG Park. They want to rent out their equipment.
Here is what I understand to date;
They will not be allowed on sidewalks in the park, nor on streets closed to traffic. They will be allowed on open streets and on the dirt trails, also utilized by walkers, bikers and those on horseback.
The City will get $ from this arrangement.
Rec/Park has met w/ Segway reps., but is not currently interested in meeting with those w/ concerns. The City Atty. is reviewing for the legal aspects.
There will be a public hearing at some point, and they don't expect this issue to come before the Commission before October.
Also, apparently, I was the first person to call w/ concerns.
Can't you just see those Segway/horse encounters now?"

Excerpt: " (Supervisor Jake) McGoldrick, who represents the city's Richmond District, also sponsored a measure that would establish a steady stream of funding for horse stables in Golden Gate Park that have been closed since 2001. The measure would set aside up to $750,000 of city money - to be used as matching funds to private contributions - to renovate and maintain the stables." Read more here.
