Planning process begun
Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) has begun a planning process to decide how best to manage dog walking in certain GGNRA lands. As part of this process, a Negotiated Rulemaking Committee for Dog Management representing the diverse interests likely to be affected by a dog management plan were appointed by the Secretary of the Interior, as allowed by the Negotiated Rulemaking Act of 1990. SFHA member Holly Prohaska was appointed to represent equestrian interests along with Judy Teichman from Marin Watch.

The Committee has been working to develop consensus recommendations to the park about where it may be appropriate to allow dog walking in GGNRA managed lands. The park intends to integrate the recommendations of the Committee's efforts into one or more alternatives for analysis in the Environmental Impact Statement which will result from the concurrent National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process.

For summaries of past committee meetings and to review information provided to the committee at any of the meetings please go to the Negotiated Rulemaking website at:

The website also details which GGNRA lands are under review for dog walking management. The next negotiated rulemaking committee meeting will be held in October 2007. Details will be posted when they are finalized in order to encourage SFHA member attendance.
