The Bay Area Ridge Trail is holding a fund-raising ride in the Santa Cruz Mountains on September 29. The funds will go toward extending the trail all around the entire Bay Area. Information about the ride is below, and a website is included for more information.
"Come ride and know that you will also be helping the Ridge Trail to connect major riding areas in the future!
Save the date of Sept. 29th for this fund raiser for the Ridge Trail Council. Ride some of our favorite trails on Skyline with lunch included!!
===============================
Hike or Ride on Saturday September, 29, 2007 for the "Ridge Trail Cruz" in the Santa Cruz Mountains
Enjoy a fully-supported day on the trail guided by Council volunteers, including lunch, snacks, and water.
You'll traverse beautiful terrain through the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, and the "long" hikers will pass through Sanborn, Skyline County Park and Castle Rock State Park.
All events start at Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve, south of the junction of Page Mill Road and Skyline Boulevard.
Hikers choose a 13-mile or 23-mile route, and are bused to the start of the hike . Mountain bicyclists choose an intermediate or advanced loop. Families can enjoy a hike around Horseshoe Lake.
Horsemen will have maps with several loop options (short, medium, longer rides) starting from in or near the Skyline Equestrian parking lot and would not likely be running into hikers and bikers from the event until in the afternoon (although others may be on trails that morning). ETRAC (Equestrian Trail Riders Action Committee) which represents many of theriding clubs in San Mateo County is a sponsor of the event and members will be on hand at the starting area to advise equestrians about their specific needs. It would be best to be there at 8:00 near the Skyline Equestrian parking lot. With the equestrians leaving the area by 9:00 am, you will not likely be running into hikers and bikers from the event until in the afternoon.
The $40 fee includes a $20 tax-deductible donation to the Ridge Trail.
Registration for the general public opens on August 15th. Non-members may register for a special $60 donation that includes a one-year membership.
Invite family and friends to sponsor your hike or ride in the Cruz-ATHON and win terrific prizes donated by REI.
Thanks to our partners: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, REI, ROMP, and ETRAC
Attendance is limited and registration is required. Please go to www.ridgetrail.org or call 415.561.2595. If you decide to register and attend, please send an email to Carole Bridgeman so that we can determine how many horsemen are likely to be there, as it will determine where rigs will be parked. Parking for horse trailer is limited. We may need to make arrangements for extra rig parking. The terrain is spectacular rolling hills with great bay and ocean views. Breast collars are recommended.
Looking forward to seeing you cruise on the Ridge Trail with us!!!
Best,
from ETRAC"

On July 31st, 2007, San Mateo County (SMC) Parks Commission, the Midcoast Recreation Planning Team met in Princeton to discuss trails on the coastside.
The 2007 Action Plan for the Midcoast Communities was presented at the meeting. That program is part of the master plan for SMC coastal lands planning. Midcoast includes the communities of Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada, Princeton, and Miramar. The intent of the plan is to insure that development of resources such as beaches, trails, views, surf, picnic and play areas benefit residents and visitors alike and fit well with the existing natural scenic resources. It sets priorities for the Park and Recreation system, for the short and long term and address financial feasibility for the policy makers to actually enable the improvements.
The list of specific needs stated in the report omitted equestrians’ sports or activities. But the following item is mentioned:
- …. trail connections for different type of users are a high priority, primarily the Coastal Trail with more lateral connections to Hwy 1.
The trail system throughout the Midcoast community is sparse. There is the shore line and a portion of the California Coastal Trail. This segment is on the west side on Highway 1 connecting the south end of El Granada to Half Moon Bay. There are also a number of undeveloped trails.
Parks and trails discussed were Quarry Park, Moss Beach Park, Pillar Point, the California Coastal Trail and the building of a trail along the south entrance of the Devil’s slide tunnel. The building of two commuter trails around the farm lands, as well as a safe crossings of Hwy 1, and the addition of facilities like bathrooms and water in certain parks were also mentioned.
As it stands now, the coastal equestrian’s most urgent concern is associated with the Peninsula Open Space Trust’s transition of Rancho Corral de Tierra to Golden Gate National Recreation Area and whether the extensive current trails will be impacted with this change in ownership. Coastal equestrians seem to agree that San Mateo County Parks Coastal Plan should be watched and their plans monitored as there is little apparent action concerning trails’ maintenance or construction.
Another concern for equestrian is the surfacing of the new or existing trails. It is important to let the officials know that paved surface on multi use trails are dangerous to equestrians and unnecessary in any case.
San Mateo County Trail Team Leader is Gael Erickson. She will be asking for input into planned county trails/linkages. She does not have equestrian trail knowledge and it would be important for anyone who rides these coastal trails to contact her and become involved in any input concerning coastal trails. The next meeting to present this plan to the SMC Parks Commission for acceptance of this report is set for September 6th, 2:30 at the SMC Board of Supervisors Chambers at the SMC Court House. Please make plans to attend to help monitor the County’s moves as it may pertain to the trails.
